Special Issue Introduction

Chronic neuroinflammation is involved in the pathogenesis of a wide range of neurological and neurodegenerative diseases, including neuropathy, multiple sclerosis, stroke, traumatic brain injury, brain tumor, depression, Parkinson’s Disease, and Alzheimer’s Disease, just to name a few. Control of neuroinflammation, especially the activation statuses of microglia and astrocytes, has emerged as a useful approach to counteract the progression of these diseases.

Physical activity represents an effective means to control neuroinflammation. Although acute, high-intensity exercise may cause muscle injury and induce inflammation, long-term exercise at low-to-moderate intensity negatively regulates the inflammatory response. Physical exercise induces a new dynamic equilibrium in the body by altering gene expression and releasing a range of factors. Besides improving neuroplasticity by altering the structure and function of the peripheral nerves and various brain regions, exercise also modulates multiple systems that are known to regulate neuroinflammation and glial activation.

In this special issue entitled “Physical Exercise and Neuroinflammation”, we aim to collect recent research advances and ongoing studies focused on the role of physical exercise in the progress of neuroinflammation-related neurological and neurodegenerative diseases. We encourage original research articles, communications, reviews, or concept papers highlighting all aspects of neuroinflammation-regulating effects of physical exercise with a special interest in the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms. Moreover, we aim to gather basic science and clinical research providing a joint commentary on exercise prescription to guide medical professionals in the development of individually tailored exercise protocol to attenuate neuroinflammation-related neurological and neurodegenerative diseases.
